Jean Marie Swenson
A longtime artist and teacher, Jean leaves behind a legacy of art and inspiration. She was an active member of Havasu Art Guild, holding many offices, and was a perpetual student of learning. Jean was always on a quest to learn more, try something new, and to strive to be more. She had a kind smile, gentle nature and a sense of adventure that will be greatly missed. The words of Quang Ho describe Jean very well. “The things that interest me most about painting are whatever is difficult or unexplored, rather than what I can already do. Following that path results in failures once in a while, but it’s much more rewarding when I make a breakthrough.” Jean’s love of art and teaching will be passed on through a scholarship established in her name by her family and friends.
Shirley Richardson
After a long struggle with cancer, Shirley passed away on June 15, 2009. Shirley was an active member of the Havasu Art Guild and the Lake Havasu Lighthouse Club. She kept busy using her art talents for both groups. She painted watercolor scenes of each lighthouse as it was dedicated. She used her paintings of lighthouses to create coasters, mouse pads, note cards, and other items of interest for the many Havasu visitors.
Jan Harmon
Jan was a talented artist with each of her art pieces showing her love of the West. Her work is described as serene, soft, strong, simple and even sensual, definitely not afraid of color. Paintings of her “West” include brilliant skies, earthy colors and simple shapes. There is a solid feel for warmth of the people, pueblos, landscapes and animals of “everyday things” with a special focus on light, shadow and texture.
Jan is known for her large softly textured oil and pastel painting and mostly of southwest influence. Her pastels are very unique as they are on canvas, just as you would paint with oils. While experimenting one day she developed a technique to permanently adhere pastels to raw canvas, the pastels don’t come off. She has also painted a large mural in the Bridge Room of the Holiday Inn, and the large Indian painting in the main room of the Library.
Jan won many awards for her work including “Women Artist of the West.” She was co-founder and president of the Lake Havasu Arts and Crafts Association, which became the Lake Havasu Art Guild. She has displayed her work in Arizona galleries in Scottsdale, Yuma, Sedona and outside Arizona in Palms Springs, Calif., Lewiston, Idaho, Reno and Washoe, Nev.
