NEWS RELEASE - JUNE 6, 2008
Hello Havasu Art Guild
(Group) Members,
As the summer began, the Guild was asked to participate in a number of
mural projects. This is a recap of the these projects. Please let me
know if you can help as it will be great fun, and a chance to make history
in Havasu.
CVS Pharmacy Coyote Mural:
The Coyote (COalition
YOuth TEam) is an organization working with the
city to turn the youth of today into a strong workforce for tomorrow.
This year's project is having a mural painted on the north wall on Mesquite
between Highway 95 and Lake Havasu Avenue. CVS Pharmacy is on that corner.
Dave McAtlin is heading the committee for the City and has asked the
Guild for help in designing and painting on the wall. Happily, it is
all coming together.
So far, the wall has been cleaned by people Dave McAtlin recruited and is ready
for the students to start painting the background June 16. The plan is that the
students will paint the background and the basic mural, and artists will fill
in with details, shading, etc., and possibly the students will want to help us
so they can learn more about painting.
Rosemary Tunnell, Cindy
Kambourian, Evelyn
Woodward, Susan Enyart,
and Darlyne Ramos, of the Guild, have met with the City people twice. Cindy suggested
using a post card theme that was readily agreed on. The subjects of the post
cards will be the history of Havasu and final choices will be made at the next
meeting, June 9 at 4:30 at City Hall. Ask the receptionist which
room it will be in. Dave McAtlin will have computerized versions of the plan
and will project it on the wall. At the meeting, the background will be finalized,
and the first six postcards will be finalized.
The youth will begin work in the next couple of weeks. The starting date for
the Guild to paint has not yet been determined. Be sure to watch the progress
on this mural. Others helping on this project are Diane
Deam and Tina Handler.
If you would like to participate, contact Cindy
Kambourian, Project Chair,
at
846-0860.

Havasu Nursing Home Mural:
(before picture)
Havasu Nursing Home has asked the Guild to paint a mural on the walls of the
staff lunchroom in order to give the staff a brighter and more pleasant work
environment. The Nursing Home is going to try to make a contribution to our scholarship
fund to compensate the Guild for their work.
A Tuscan theme was requested. Evelyn Woodward designed a lovely scene with arches,
fountains, cypress trees and bright flowers. Currently the Nursing home is repainting
the cabinets and repairing the walls in readiness for the mural. This should
be completed in a week or so and work can begin.
Currently Diane Deam, Mary Matarazzo, and Tina Handler have indicated
interest in helping with this project. If you would like to help, email
Evelyn Woodward,
project chair, or call 855-6340, and be a part of this community
endeavor.

(after)

The mural at the nursing home was completed the first week in July. The
work was done by Evelyn Woodward and Rickie Sapp. Jenny Anderson was able
to work on it for a few hours. The mural is a colorful and beautiful rendition
of the Italian countryside, and the nursing home staff are very pleased.
For those of you who volunteered to work on this mural, and did not get
the opportunity, I am very sorry that didn't happen. I want to assure all
our volunteers that you will be included in the other projects - there
is a lot happening around town, and we need your help.

RUDAT Murals:
The up-town improvement group (RUDAT) has also asked the Guild’s
help in coming up with additional ideas to improve the downtown area.
They are looking at creating murals for several of the walls located
between the back parking lots and McCulloch and also along the Pima Wash
area. They have identified a couple of starting points.
Murals can be painted, tiled, in mosaic, or other medium. The realm of
ideas is wide open as these projects are only in the discussion stage
at this point. The next meeting Is scheduled for July 7th at
2:00 at the Chamber of Commerce. Be sure to come with
viable sketches and ideas. If you have any questions, email
Rosemary Tunnell or
call 486-5520.

RUDAT projects:
At the meeting on July 7th, Lee Mulligan presented some beautiful ceramic
tiles of the London bridge showing the possible use of tile in murals.
She also had some wonderful examples of polished rocks and ideas for a
river walkway made of glass incorporating the Rotary seal and the city
seal.
Nan and C Russell of the Gem Society brought a lava rock sculpture of a
cactus and suggested using large local rocks that are no longer available
as educational features (like the rocks at MCC).
Aso presented were some pictures of mosiac pillars depicting local birds,
fish and wildlife that could be placed along the pathway at Pima Wash.
We requested a color drawing of the Rotary seal, and the new city seal
so we can begin working on the design of the seals. We also asked for a
blueprint of the Pima wash area so we can see what is planned and where
our items can fit.
The next meeting is scheduled for July 31st at 2:00 PM at the Chamber of
Commerce Bldg. Be sure to bring your ideas and be there.

Allied Arts Showcase:
In addition to murals, the Allied Arts Council wants to showcase all
the visual and performing arts of Lake Havasu during London Bridge Days.
They have scheduled the Aquatic Center for Tuesday,
October 28th. The
Art Guild will be able to have a booth featuring a selection of media
representing the talents of the Guild members. More information on this
event will be available at the September General meeting.
